One of the neatest new features in Windows 7 Professional and above is XP Mode, but not all machines are capable of running it. Today we show you how to use VMware to run XP Mode on machines without Hardware Virtualization.
How does this work.
Even if your computer doesn t have hardware virtualization, you can still install XP Mode but just cannot run it as you can t run Virtual PC. Enter VMware Player. This free program lets you create and run virtual machines, whether or not you have hardware virtualization. And, it can directly import XP Mode so you can use that copy of XP for free. A couple features are different, but it s still a great replacement since you otherwise couldn t use it at all.
Note: XP Mode does not work on Home Versions of Windows 7 and you ll need VMware Player 3.0
Getting Started
First, download and install XP Mode link below. There is no need to download Virtual PC if your computer cannot run it, so just download the XP Mode from the link on the left.
Install XP mode; just follow the default prompts as usual.
Now, download and install VMware player. The download is free, but requires registration.
You may see some prompts about installing drivers; simply approve them. We didn t see them on our latest test, but have in the past. When you are finished installing VMware Player, you will have to restart your computer.
Add XP Mode to VMware Player
Now that your computer is rebooted, run VMware Player. We can import XP Mode by clicking File, then click Import Windows XP Mode VM.
VMware Player will simply start importing your XP Mode. Converting XP mode to VMware format may take a couple minutes depending on your hardware, so just be patient.
When this is done, you should see a new virtual machine in VMware Player called XP Mode. Click Play Virtual Machine to run XP Mode.
XP will run through it s first-run setup process.
While it is loading, you may be prompted to install or update VMware Tools. This is required to integrate XP Mode into your computer, so click Update Tools or Install Tools depending on you situation.
The tools will automatically download and install, though you may have to approve an UAC prompt.
Now you can proceed with your XP setup. Accept the license agreement,

Enter a name for the virtual machine and an administrative password
And enter the correct date, time, and timezone. It usually gets the correct time and date from your computer itself, but the time zone is often incorrect.
XP will now finalize your changes, and then reboot.
When XP Mode restarts, choose your settings for updates.
Windows may ask to search for drivers. Simply press cancel, as VMware Tools will contain everything we need.
After a short delay, you should see your XP desktop in VMware Player.
There s one last thing that needs to be installed – VMware Tools. This should automatically open in XP Mode; if not, click Start, then My Computer, and finally double-click on the CD drive which should say VMware Tools.
Now, simply run the Tools installer with the Typical setup type, and reboot the XP Mode when it s finished.
Now VMWare is setup and we re ready to start integrating it with Windows 7.
Integrate XP Mode in VMware Player with Windows 7
The real advantage of the default XP Mode in Windows 7 is that the XP programs are fully integrated with their Windows 7 counterparts. You can run them seamlessly with other programs, copy between them, and even open and save files to the same folders.
Let s set this up in VMware. Copy and paste from Windows 7 to XP Mode in VMware is activated by default. To use your XP programs seamlessly with Windows 7, click VM on the top of the VMware window, and click Enter Unity.
You can easily access any program or file in XP mode through a dedicated XP Mode Start Menu. When you hover over your Windows 7 Start button, a new button called Windows XP Mode will above it. Click there to access a full start menu from XP Mode right in Windows 7.
Here is an IE 6 window from XP running side-by-side with IE 8 in Windows 7, thanks to VMware Player.
By default, the virtualized windows will have a border and the VMware logo on their edge.
To remove this logo, click VM in the VMware player window, then settings. Click on the Options tab, and choose Unity on the left. Now uncheck the boxes that say Show borders and Show badges.
Without having the VMWare borders and badges give everything a more authentic XP Mode look and feel.
You can even use removable devices, such as flash drives, in XP Mode in VMware Player. Whenever you connect a new device to your computer, VMware will remind you that you can add it to XP Mode.
Simply click VM, then Removable Devices. Select your device name, and click Connect.
Save Files in XP Mode to My Documents in Windows 7
By default, files created in XP Mode in VMware Player will be saved inside the virtual machine. It s more convenient if they re saved directly to the My Documents folder in Windows 7, so let s change this. Click VM, then Settings. Click the Options tab, and then choose Shared Folders on the left. Now click the bullet for Always enabled and check the box for Map as a network drive in Windows guests.
Now click Add at the bottom of that window. This will let us add a shared folder.
Let s add the My Documents folder from Windows 7. Click Browse, and then select your My Documents folder. Click Ok, and then click Next.
Make sure the box is checked that says Enable this share and then click Finish. You can now close the settings window as well.
Back in XP Mode, click Start, then right click on My Documents, and select Properties.
Click Move to find the new My Documents folder.
Find the folder we just shared from Windows 7 by clicking My Computer, then the drive that says Shared Folders on vmware-host or something similar. Now select the folder we shared, Documents, and click Ok.
Click Ok in the main properties window. It may offer to copy the files from your old My Documents folder to the new one; choose Yes to make sure you have all of your documents in Windows 7.
Now, whenever you go to save a file in XP Mode, it will automatically save in your My Documents folder on Windows 7. You can repeat the same process for any folder you wish, such as your My Pictures and My Music folders.
Conclusion
That s all now you have your full XP Mode running on your computer without hardware virtualization. Almost all the same features are there; the only thing you re missing is the Start Menu integration, but VMware s menu is the next best thing. In our tests using VMware worked as good or better as actual XP Mode on a machine that supports hardware virtualization. If you re frustrated that the Windows 7 machine s you have don t support XP Mode, using our VMware method works, and allows you to use it on whatever machine you want.

Hui said Malaysian police last month arrested more than 200 cyber scammers from China and Taiwan in two syndicates managed from Taiwan.
Hackers penetrated the Interpol Web site this year.
Online crime costs Europe annually about 750 billion euros, or 977 billion, he said.
Hui said Interpol will open a digital security complex in Singapore in 2014.

Hui said cyber crime costs Europe about 750 billion euros, or more than 977 billion, a year. Israel alone deals with more than 1,000 Web attacks a minute, he said.
To help train police worldwide in online law enforcement, Hui said Interpol will open a cyber crime and digital security complex in Singapore in 2014.
This week s conference also addressed other issues including international terrorism, the drug trade, and human trafficking.

A flexible pavement structure is typically composed of several
layers of material with better quality materials on top where the
intensity of stress from traffic loads is high and lower quality
materials at the bottom where the stress intensity is low. Flexible
pavements can be analyzed as a multilayer system under loading.
A typical flexible pavement structure consists of the surface
course and underlying base and subbase courses. Each of these layers
contributes to structural support and drainage.
When hot mix asphalt HMA is used as the surface course,
it is the stiffest as measured by resilient modulus and may contribute
the most depending upon thickness to pavement strength. The underlying
layers are less stiff but are still important to pavement strength
as well as drainage and frost protection.
When a seal coat is used as the surface course, the base generally
is the layer that contributes most to the structural stiffness.
A typical structural design results in a series of layers that gradually decrease
in material quality with depth.
Figure 2-1 shows
a typical section for a flexible pavement.

Perpetual pavement is a term used to describe a long-life
structural design. It uses premium HMA mixtures,
appropriate construction techniques and occasional maintenance to
renew the surface. Close attention must be paid to proper construction
techniques to avoid problems with permeability, trapping moisture,
segregation with depth, and variability of density with depth. A perpetual
pavement can last 30 yr. or more if properly maintained.
Structural deterioration typically occurs due to either classical
bottom-up fatigue cracking, rutting of the HMA layers, or rutting
of the subgrade. Perpetual pavement is designed to withstand almost infinite
number of axle loads without structural deterioration by limiting
the level of load-induced strain at the bottom of the HMA layers
and top of the subgrade and using deformation resistant HMA mixtures.

a generalized perpetual pavement design. Detailed construction considerations

A rigid pavement structure is composed of a hydraulic cement
concrete surface course and underlying base and subbase courses
if used. Another term commonly used is Portland cement concrete PCC
pavement, although with today s pozzolanic additives, cements may
no longer be technically classified as Portland.
The surface course concrete slab is the stiffest layer and
provides the majority of strength. The base or subbase layers are
orders of magnitude less stiff than the PCC surface but still make
important contributions to pavement drainage and frost protection
and provide a working platform for construction equipment.
Rigid pavements are substantially stiffer than flexible
pavements due to the high modulus of elasticity of the PCC material,
resulting in very low deflections under loading. The rigid pavements
can be analyzed by the plate theory. Rigid pavements can have reinforcing
steel, which is generally used to handle thermal stresses to reduce
or eliminate joints and maintain tight crack widths.

CRCP provides joint-free design. The formation of transverse
cracks at relatively close intervals is a distinctive characteristic
of CRCP. These cracks are held tightly by the reinforcement and
should be of no concern as long as the cracks are uniformly spaced,
do not spall excessively, and a uniform non-erosive base is provided.

CPCD uses contraction joints to control cracking and does
not use any reinforcing steel. An alternative designation used by
the industry is jointed concrete pavement JCP. Transverse joint
spacing is selected such that temperature and moisture stresses
do not produce intermediate cracking between joints. Nationally,
this results in a spacing no longer than 20 ft. The standard spacing
in Texas is 15.0 ft.
Dowel bars are typically used at transverse joints to assist
in load transfer. Tie bars are typically used at longitudinal joints.
Figure 2-5 shows
a typical section of CPCD.

JRCP uses contraction joints and reinforcing steel to control
cracking. Transverse joint spacing is longer than that for concrete
pavement contraction design CPCD and, in Texas, it typically ranges from
30 ft. to 60 ft. This rigid pavement design option is no longer
endorsed by the department because of past difficulties in selecting
effective rehabilitation strategies. However, there are several
remaining sections in service.

a typical section of jointed reinforced concrete pavement.

Post-tensioned concrete pavements remain in the experimental
stage and their design is primarily based on experience and engineering
judgment. Post-tensioned concrete has been used more frequently

Microsoft does some amazing things – very amazing things. My choice, however, for a primary desktop operating system is no longer Windows – it s Mac OS X. Duh. It s rather difficult to admit that officially, if only because well, I think Microsoft does amazing things. They ve also been quite supportive of my own efforts over the years, if only because they understand the value of one user.
I m still openly willing to give feedback to Microsoft s product teams – Windows included.

Realizing that many of you are hooked on Parallels, I m guessing that VMware would do just about anything to win your attention. Anybody in my chat room who watches the live video feed with any regularity knows that I m a platform neutral geek. Keep that in mind as you read the following list:
Seems that the future of Windows development is happening largely for corporate environments and customers. I don t take issue with this other than being someone who doesn t live or work inside a corporate environment at home.
Excellent power management in OS X. When I close the lid to my MacBook Pro, it falls asleep. When I open the lid to my MacBook Pro, it wakes up. Imagine that. Seems to be the case 99 of the time, and it happens quickly.
I m ready to experience different frustrations. OS X isn t perfect, certainly – but I already see its noticeably more stable than Windows Vista has been. Kernel Panics at least look prettier than BSODs. : Seriously, I just find OS X s update schedule to be more to my liking – instead of waiting for gigantic service packs, I get minor point releases along the way to major revisions to the OS. Bugs are going to happen, but knowing that showstopping / security bugs are likely to be squished quicker gives me amazing peace of mind.
There s more interesting, useful, beautiful, and affordable software being developed for OS X. If you still believe that there s no software for the Mac, you re simply a fool who hasn t done his or her research.
VMware Fusion makes it possible to have every operating system at my fingertips as well as every app that runs on em, FTW. Performance and stability is a reality, not a dream. More importantly, with USB 2.0 support in VMware Fusion, I have near complete compatibility with any external hardware. Parallels is also there, which should keep competition lively.
I believe that the future of Windows or any OS software layer will be experienced in a virtual machine of some sort. People have been dual booting for years – now I can triple-task cross-platform in seconds flat.
Not to say that Microsoft or Linux haven t made great strides in recent years, but at least Leopard feels like only one team was developing the UI. It s not quite perfect, but closer to what perfect should be. I m not a huge fan of iTunes or every other Apple utility – but at least with Leopard, they re trying to make them look and work the same way.
I love the fact that most programs and their associated libraries are self-contained apps. There s no stress in installing / uninstalling most programs, and for true cleanup jobs there s always AppZapper.
I m not a huge fan of the Dock for task management, but Quicksilver has virtually no Windows equivalent in terms of elegance and scriptability, although it s still completely overwhelming to me right now. The dock isn t a shining example of where OS X is better, but I do appreciate the context menu options for each of the Dock s icons for Open at Login management.
Spotlight is to Windows Desktop Search as a BMW Z4 is to a Ford Pinto in terms of performance, usability, and UI. No contest. I m sure some would argue the opposite, but they re also probably the extreme developer but it works if you just learn how to use it right types. Feh.
The Apple community has been infiltrated by enough people who aren t smug. You re not better than me just because you run another OS or support another vendor, nor are you any less of a geek. Not every Windows user is a neanderthal, although some of their dated arguments would make them out to be. I think that most consumers are caught up in the idea that you NEED Windows for everything at home. You don t.
My iPhone is not going away anytime soon. Would I switch for better compatibility with a communications device. Not necessarily, but if the future of OS X is in the present of the iPhone they re going to gain consumer market share at blinding speed. Remember, I wanted to hate this device – after years of being a dyed-in-the-wool Windows Mobile advocate.
The spyware / malware / virus threat is diminished by an extreme degree. Not to say that one should avoid running protective layers of software or hardware, but I m just not as nervous when I try a new app on OS X.
Many of my friends are considering making the switch as well. This dovetails nicely with my first point. I can tell you that just by showing off the fun features of CamTwist and Colloquy with my live stream, a few of those community members have already purchased MacBooks – or are strongly considering doing so in the not-too-distant future. Interestingly enough, those are two FREE apps that work amazingly better than most overpriced Windows shareware titles.
Microsoft Windows completely abandoned its power users, period. Where are the Windows Vista Ultimate add-ons. Where are the new Power Toys. Why doesn t Windows Media Player have podcast support yet despite me telling them to integrate RSS back when WMP9 was in beta, years before podcasting was a buzzword. I m not saying that Windows is dead – not by any stretch of the imagination.
Boot Camp, if all else fails.
A single SKU of Leopard is both 32-bit and 64-bit compatible. This, alone, is a fantastic reason to embrace the platform. It s seamless. Why should a consumer have to come to a decision on which code to run – or understand the differences between them in the first place. Remember, I m to be considered a home user.
Time Machine. Wow. Can it really be this simple. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine. Do you understand what that means. And no, Windows Volume Shadow Copy is not the SAME thing.
Leopard s Finder will allegedly search networked computers seamlessly, as well as allow you to access those results remotely through a paid. Mac account, which would totally be worth purchasing at that point.
Java app performance is decent on OS X, and the same code looks infinitely better when it s not running on Windows. In fact, most third-party apps are very well designed so as to integrate seamlessly with the entire OS. That s beyond refreshing.
You never need to defrag a Mac s hard disk.
Adium is there – an Instant Messaging client that allows you to use AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk, and other accounts through a single client. It d be my replacement for Miranda IM. Skype also works on the Mac. I expect to see even more universal IM apps reveal themselves over the coming months.
Bonjour is proving to be quite useful on my home network. Computers with Bonjour-enabled services are automatically discovered with virtually no fuss – even my networked Windows machines have been playing along.
Joining wireless networks in OS X is easier and more refined, easily accessible. The tools for networking don t seem overly complex, either.
Setting up services such as Windows File Sharing, FTP, and even Web sharing can be done on OS X with just a few clicks. If you re telling me that I could set up FTP just as easily in Windows, then it obviously can t be done as easily.
Almost all of the audio and video formats out there can be played on the Mac with Video LAN Player VLC. One less barrier to entry.
Great Web browsers that work in Windows also work on the Mac Firefox, Opera, SeaMonkey, Flock. The only exception here is Internet Explorer, or any third-party overlay to IE such as Maxthon, which has been taking a slight turn for the worse with 2.0. Of course, there s always the invisible virtual machine possibility read: VMware Fusion s Unity mode. Moreover, Safari / WebKit is gaining speed on all platforms.
Erasing deleted files placed in your trash also known as a Recycle Bin in Windows can be securely erased in OS X. No need to mess with third-party software.
You can still right-click in OS X – and the way Apple decided to implement it is far more convenient than you d think. In fact, I find double-tapping the mouse pad far more intuitive than using a second mouse button. Didn t take long to get used to it at all.
Wanna set up a VNC server on your Mac. No problem, its already apart of the operating system. Moreover, the feature isn t buried three levels deep. It s sitting right there in the Finder. Moreover, unlike Windows Remote Desktop, a Screen Sharing session doesn t lock the remote user out of his / her session – one reason I ve always loathed RDC.
Microsoft doesn t have an iLife. Not even close. It has a set of multimedia applications, but they don t seem to be cohesive in the slightest. Maybe things will get better as Live continues to evolve.
You really don t get to play the blame game with Apple. They make the hardware AND the operating system, so they really know what s going on, and they really know if the problem is widespread.
A Mac costs about the same as a comparable Windows PC – for hardware and for argument s sake for those who don t believe me bundled software. And for those who still claim that Macs are still more expensive, they obviously have never seen or priced a gaming rig. Price / cost is relative. If you want a cheap machine, that s your prerogative. The resell value on Macs has always been higher than that of an equivalent Windows machine.
You can record audio and video conversations from iChat 4.0 natively. That s pretty amazing, as it takes the idea of video chat and puts it into a time-shifted space. This isn t just useful for those of us who conduct guest interviews regularly, but for home users who want to save calls for posterity.
Dashcode appears to take the geekery out of widget-building. Moreover, the new Web Clippings widget appears to work better than anything I ve seen come from Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, et al. This is putting the user first
With a. Mac subscription, you can save common local settings as global ones. You only have to configure your Dock or System Preferences on one machine to have those same changes appear on all machines connected to your. Mac account. Unbelievable.
Unlike Windows font management, you can activate fonts as you need them within Leopard. This translates to less wasted overhead by fonts that remain largely unused in memory. I can only imagine this results in far less resource-intensive sessions. Genius.
Automator now supports UI Recording and Playback, which means you can create macros without understanding a lick of logic. The last time I saw a native macro recorder in Windows was v3.0. You don t have to be a geek to gain access to geeky-cool features.
Can t tell you how much I love Spring Loaded folders. Love em.
Wikipedia information, while not always accurate, certainly stands to be updated a lot more frequently than documentation that ships with or from the operating system designer. That Apple has taken the step to integrate access directly from within the Dictionary tool. It s just kinda nice to have there. They re placing trust in the idea of community rather than trying to hide it from us.
Mail comes with Data Detectors which will highlight phone numbers, addresses, etc. You can then choose to do something with that information, like map it or store it as an appointment, contact, etc. This is a feature I had not seen outside of a pricey plugin for Microsoft Outlook. I may not use Mail.app, but at least they re continuing to improve its functionality – ugly capsule toolbar icons notwithstanding.
The Preview tool ain t no joke – with annotations, basic image editing, Core Animation zooming and scrolling, GPS Metadata support, batch operations, etc. It s all at your fingertips.
Expose works. Nuff said. The only thing that surpasses OS X s open window management is Compiz Fusion. None of this Flip3D nonsense.
Help. No, seriously – Help is the way Help should have always been all along. I related my Help experience a few weeks ago, with the system not just finding what I was looking for help on, but taking me directly to the spot where I needed to be. I m pretty sure the Help system isn t 100 accurate, but it hasn t disappointed me yet.
Guest accounts are purged after every session in Leopard. Wow. Guest privileges, on the other hand, seem to be lacking somewhat on the security front but most of my Guests are computer clueless.
I love the Universal Access zoom feature – and have used it so many times for countless reasons. Really comes in handy when you re trying to show something to someone from across the room. Never found anything close to its simplicity anywhere else.
Call me crazy, but I love the fact that in OS X, the keyboard shortcut for opening Preferences is always the same Command Comma. Convenient. Dependable. Quick.
Device compatibility doesn t seem to be as much of an issue as it used to be with the Mac. While I couldn t get my brand new HP LaserJet to work inside of Vista, it works flawlessly inside of OS X 10.4 despite having to use HP s scanning software. Still, with any USB hardware hiccups in Leopard, compatibility issues are erased with VMware Fusion until newer software is unleashed.
Thanks to another one of our sponsors, GoToMeeting, I ve had the opportunity to see quite a few of my friends desktops. Quite a few have gone to great lengths to make their installation of Windows look and feel like Mac OS X. At that point, what s the point of sticking with Windows. Just about the only thing Mac users might want from Windows is the Explorer FTFF – and even then, there s Path Finder.
I ve said it before, and I ll say it again: Windows users need Apple s software more than Mac users need Microsoft s. That s just a cold, hard fact. And given my severe disappointment with just about everything in Mac Office 2008, I m even further driven away from Microsoft s desktop software.
Please don t take this post as an all-out lovefest for Apple and it s definitely not a hatefest for Microsoft, either. The two can co-exist peacefully if you let them, and if your routine supports it. I wasn t ready to switch before now for a lot of reasons. This has been a long time coming.
I think it s lousy that Apple charges for QuickTime Pro and Remote Desktop, I believe iTunes and iPhoto are inelegant management tools Picasa for OS X would rule. At least Aperture 2.0 looks promising for me. And, for whatever it s worth, I ve yet to hear from anybody at Apple in respect to marketing, sponsorship, endorsement, support – or otherwise. I d imagine they d be interested in knowing my background, and why this leap is relatively monumental for me – and a sign of things to come for the greater part of our community.
So, let s say that the next version of Windows is amazing – for argument s sake. Would I switch back to the PC for my primary computing needs. Doubtful, because I m guessing that virtual machine support will continue to improve in leaps and bounds with greater hardware support to boot. Microsoft Windows isn t in trouble, necessarily – but I do believe that it s better read: somewhat safer, more affordable to run Windows in a virtual machine with USB 2.0 hardware support than it is to run it directly on the desktop.
If you re a gamer, all bets are off – you re a different kind of user. Gamers are likely the reason Windows is still alive and well at home today. If the gaming industry shifted gears and started to develop OpenGL-based entertainment titles for Linux, you d see Ubuntu adoption skyrocket. I m a console player – still in love with my 360, as noted before. I m a casual gamer, and I can casual game anywhere.
I ll still have traditional PC hardware around the house – especially since Ponzi may or may not be making this switch with me. We re still living inside of Outlook, with no other usable PIM in reach on any platform. I ve been showing her a few cool things that you can only do with the Mac, and she s certainly seen me try Outlook 2007 in VMware Fusion. I m also looking forward to tinkering with new systems as they re released from a variety of OEMs. I couldn t abandon my beloved HP All-in-One LaserJet.
Point is: I m not going all Apple.
In time, this will all become easier to manage – but there s no time like the present to shelve the last ten years of Windows enthusiasm and switch. I m fine with being a Microsoft enthusiast in other areas, mind you – very much so. They re doing too many good things for me to ignore, and their community involvement puts Apple to shame. My choice for an operating system is just that – my choice for an OS.
And before anybody jumps in and claims that you can achieve the same level of happiness after installing 50 third-party add-ons, plugins, extensions, and utilities to Windows you simply don t get it, and you probably never will. I can t be alone, and I m predicting that by the end of next year, even more people will choose and use Mac OS X over Windows Vista. I can t open up the phone lines anymore without being inundated with calls that suggest such a tipping point. Everybody is curious
and curiosity is what keeps me going.
As a power user, Mac OS X has far more to offer me in terms of tweak-ability and modularity. I learned that by trying it, not by guessing that it wasn t possible.
I heart MacOSXHints.com. I heart TUAW.com. I heart DaringFireball.net. I heart TidBits.com. I heart so many Mac software developers like Steve Green and Wil Shipley and Randy Green and Brian Skrab and others. I heart watching for news of some new application, though I m not quite on any review lists yet – it seems like a simpler nut to crack than it was in the world of Windows shareware.

How to Fix a Crack in a Wood Stove With Furnace Cement

Regular maintenance will keep your wood stove in top shape.
A wood stove will warm your toes on a cold winter s night and many homeowners prefer it over any other type of heat because fuel is ecological, as well as economical. So don t throw that wood stove out when a crack appears; the repair isn t as difficult as it seems. Furnace cement will seal the crack and get the stove back in working order. Make this a DIY project and save yourself money on the cost of repairs or a new stove.
Turn the stove off and allow it to cool completely.
Lay a drop cloth on the floor. Remove flaking metal, using a paint scraper. Use a stiff wire brush to remove rust particles.
Wash the stove with soapy water or a degreasing cleaner to remove dirt and greasy residue. Ensure that the area is completely clean as furnace cement won t adhere to dirt or grease. Allow the stove to dry completely.
Stir the cement until it is smooth and creamy, using the tip of a putty knife.
Dampen the cracked area with water, if it is advised by the manufacturer. This step isn t required with all products as application procedures vary.
Scoop the cement, using a putty knife. Apply a thin layer over the crack. Press the cement into the recessed area of the crack and pack it down firmly.
Apply a second, generous layer of cement over the crack. Smooth it with the putty knife. Blend and feather the edges of the cement paste into the surface of the stove. Remove excess cement with a clean, damp cloth.
Allow the cement to set according to the manufacturer s instructions.
Turn on the stove. Adjust the setting to Low or keep the fire low to start curing the cement.
Increase the heat slowly according to the manufacturer s instructions. Do this until the cement has cured to a solid, uniform mass.

Wear rubber gloves when working with furnace cement.
Warnings
Furnace cement emits fumes; ventilate the area.
Avoid contact with acidic material as furnace cement is alkaline and mixing the two could cause a chemical reaction.

CONFIDENTIALITY. If you wish to have a third party consultant or subcontractor Contractor perform work on your behalf which involves access to or use of Software, you shall obtain a written confidentiality agreement from the Contractor which contains provisions with respect to access to or use of the Software no less restrictive than those set forth in this Agreement and excluding any distribution rights, and use for any other purpose. Except as expressly provided herein, you shall not disclose the terms or existence of this Agreement or use Intel s name in any publications, advertisements, or other announcements without Intel s prior written consent. You do not have any rights to use any Intel trademarks or logos.
OWNERSHIP OF SOFTWARE AND COPYRIGHTS. Software and accompanying materials, if any, are owned by Intel or its suppliers and licensors and may be protected by copyright, trademark, patent and trade secret law and international treaties. Any rights, express or implied, in the intellectual property embodied in the foregoing, other than those specified in this Agreement, are reserved by Intel and its suppliers and licensors or otherwise as set forth in any applicable open source license agreement. You will keep the Software free of liens, attachments, and other encumbrances. You agree not to remove any proprietary notices and/or any labels from the Software and accompanying materials without prior written approval by Intel.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL INTEL OR ITS SUPPLIERS AND LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER FROM ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OF ANY KIND INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, LOST PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, OR LOST INFORMATION ARISING OUT OF THE USE, MODIFICATION, OR INABILITY TO USE THE INTEL SOFTWARE, OR OTHERWISE, NOR FOR PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR SPECIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, EVEN IF INTEL OR ITS SUPPLIERS AND LICENSORS HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. APPLICABLE LAW. Claims arising under this Agreement shall be governed by the laws of State of California, excluding its principles of conflict of laws and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the Sale of Goods.
WAIVER AND AMENDMENT. No modification, amendment or waiver of any provision of this Agreement shall be effective unless in writing and signed by an officer of Intel. No failure or delay in exercising any right, power, or remedy under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of any such right, power or remedy. Without limiting the foregoing, terms and conditions on any purchase orders or similar materials submitted by you to Intel, and any terms contained in Intel s standard acknowledgment form that are in conflict with these terms, shall be of no force or effect.
SEVERABILITY. If any provision of this Agreement is held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be contrary to law, such provision shall be changed and interpreted so as to best accomplish the objectives of the original provision to the fullest extent allowed by law and the remaining provisions of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.
EXPORT RESTRICTIONS. Each party acknowledges that the Software is subject to applicable import and export regulations of the United States and of the countries in which each party transacts business, specifically including U.S. Export Administration Act and Export Administration Regulations. Each party shall comply with such laws and regulations, as well as all other laws and regulations applicable to the Software. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, each party agrees that it will not export, re-export, transfer or divert any of the Software or the direct programs thereof to any restricted place or party in accordance with U.S. export regulations. Note that Software containing encryption may be subject to additional restrictions.
GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS. The Software is provided with RESTRICTED RIGHTS. Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject to restrictions as set forth in FAR52.227-14 and DFAR252.227-7013 et seq. or their successors. Use of the Software by the Government constitutes acknowledgment of Intel s proprietary rights therein. Contractor or Manufacturer is Intel Corporation, 2200 Mission College Blvd., Santa Clara, CA 95052.
TERMINATION OF THE AGREEMENT. Intel may terminate this Agreement if you violate its terms. Upon termination, you will immediately destroy the Software or return all copies of the Software to Intel.

4. You may not sublicense the Software.
5. The Software may contain the software or other property of third party suppliers.

Multiple postdoctoral openings currently available on two new projects aimed at accelerating expertise development from training using memory systems theory. One project will develop methods to improve the use of intuition in decision making. The second project will use targeted memory reactivation to enhance consolidation processes and speed learning. Both projects reflect collaborative research between the laboratories of Professor Paul Reber and Professor Ken Paller Also see for further information on the local cognitive neuroscience environment.
We are searching for postdoctoral candidates with a strong interest in human memory research and with expertise in some of the following areas: memory systems research, experimental behavioral methods, computational simulation modeling, multivariate pattern analysis, EEG recording and analysis.
Interested candidates can send inquiries and application materials to Susan Florczak. Applications will be evaluated when received and hiring decisions made on a rolling basis. Multiple two-year appointments are currently available. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, and names of at least three references.

Does technology make you smarter or dumber.
I got another request to comment on yet another media claim that technology is bad for our brains. It s actually also a good example of really poor science reporting in the media, so I won t link it, but the topic seems generally of interest and it appears to be based on a curious underlying folk model of cognition worth thinking about.
How would this work. How could technology make us less smart. The core idea is that be looking things up, we memorize less and therefore we are less smart than we could be otherwise. But this misses the issue of substitution. If you aren t memorizing something you can look up, do you learn something else instead.
To me, the interesting underlying idea is: Memory doesn t have an off switch
We are constantly recording experiences from our environment. Of course, not everything gets remembered, so maybe we focus too much on the memory failures. But we aren t consciously turning our memories on and off through the day. So if we are trying to memorize arbitrary facts that we could look up on google instead, during that time we aren t doing something else that could have left a useful memory trace. Note that I m describing this as an attention/perception bottleneck, but it could be a memory consolidation level bottleneck as well which is probably the actual constraint that keeps us from remembering everything we experience.
The only way for this argument to really make sense is to have a strong theory that everything we would have memorized instead of relying on google is more valuable to our internal knowledge state than everything we learn instead. I think that is going to be a hard case to make. And it won t really be about technology.
There s another way to make a possible technology hurts the brain case based on skill learning/strengthening. If memory is a skill that can be improved by intensive practice, then concentrated attempts to memorize arbitrary information could theoretically make you better at remembering and over time, you d just get smarter. But there is no evidence anywhere that long-term memory can be strengthened this way and many people have tried to do this.
Working memory looks to be trainable, but if anything, technology that makes you hold a question in mind while putting in the search terms to look it up is going to expand your WM rather than causing it to atrophy.
So no, technology is not going to make us less smart. It s almost certain to be overwhelmingly in the other direction the access provided by the internet to incredibly rich and diverse kinds of information means the average knowledge content of the average human brain in the 21st century is a lot more than the 20th or any other prior time.
Questions from a middle schooler about videogames
I was asked to answer some questions from a middle school student doing a research project on video games. Since I am interested in the topic generally, I should probably figure out how to answer these kinds of questions at an age-appropriate level. My attempt:

1. Do video games affect the human brain. Do video games affect the way of thinking. Do video games damage the thinking part of the brain.
Yes, video games can affect your brain, like anything else that you do a lot of. However, these changes can sometimes be for the better. There is recent evidence of improvements in visuospatial attention how you see the world following video game play. There may also be changes for the worse, like increasing aggression, but these are not yet well understood.
2. Can video games improve people s knowledge. Can they help people s grades get better in school. Or can the y get bad grades.
Video games probably won t help you in school very much. They can cause problems in schoolwork when kids play too many games and don t keep up with homework and assignments. If you are getting your homework done, playing games won t hurt and may actually help a little bit.
3. Can video games make people lose time. With friends and family. Time outside.
If you spend too much time on games and do not make time for friends, family, proper exercise and sleep, then that will very likely cause problems.
4. Can video games make people sick. Gain weight. Headaches or a tumor.
Some people report dizziness and nausea upset stomach from games that give you first person perspective. This is very likely related to the kind of motion sickness you can get when riding in a car. In rare cases, some people may react badly to flashing lights/sounds in video games. In general, games won t make you sick. If you eat in an unhealthy way when playing videogames, that can lead to weight gain and other health problems.
5. Can video games make people addicted to what their mainly about. How do they do this. Why do people get addicted.
Gaming addiction is not well understood. Games aren t addictive the way other things are like cigarettes. However, there are certainly some people who have problems like in 2 and 3 above. They seem to play so much that it messes up a lot of other things in their life. That looks a lot like being addicted. It also can look like a lot of other problems that teenagers often run into mood swings, depression, difficulty in relating to others. I do not think it is well known whether games can cause those problems or whether kids having those kinds of problems for another reason sometimes like to play a lot of videogames.

Forgetting names
For some reason, I ve been getting a lot of requests lately to explain why we are bad at remembering people s names lately. An email exchange on this with an Atlantic reporter got summarized online here:

And then I was contacted earlier this week and did a short conversation on the phone with a radio show, Newstalk, in Ireland with host Sean Moncrieff.
All the conversations went well, although I m not sure I had much to say beyond the basics that names are hard and arbitrary, unlike other facts you tend to learn about people you meet.
A more interesting idea is that I suspect there is a reverse Dunning-Kruger effect for name memory. Dunning-Kruger effects are cases where everybody thinks they are above average. For names, my sense is that most people think they are below average. I would guess they aren t, but just that most of us are bad at names. In theory, it wouldn t be very hard to test this, but I don t think anybody has even run a real experiment.

Pizza delivery driver Ara Lester knows he s required by U.S. tax law to report his tips, but he claims he never has and never will.
The seven-year veteran from Bemidji, Minn., said he s never worked in an operation where a tip-reporting policy was posted, nor for a supervisor who demanded he report a shift s gratuities.
Never once has it been said that this is our policy, that this is what you have to claim, said Lester, 30, who works for Domino s Pizza. If his boss pressed him to report his tips, Lester said he d quit in a minute, laugh in his face and walk out of the store and go to work at Papa John s.
Tallying employee tip reports, Lester said, is his employer s problem, not his.
And on June 17, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially agreed with him. In a 6-3 decision in Fior d Italia vs. United States, the Court ruled that, in an audit, the Internal Revenue Service can determine back taxes owed by an operator by estimating cash tips received by its employees based on an average of tips left on credit cards.
During its 1992 audit of Fior d Italia, the IRS calculated that on average, a 14.5 percent average tip was left on credit card receipts. It applied that average to the San Francisco restaurant s gross sales and determined that some of the employees cash tips had not been reported. In the end, Fior d Italia received a tax bill for more than 23,000.
The restaurant appealed the ruling and defended itself successfully in two lower courts before the Supreme Court ruled otherwise.
Ever since a 1988 law put the onus on business owners to ensure their employees reported 100 percent of their tips, employers claimed that task was impossible.
The High Court s ruling that they indeed are accountable, said Peter Kilgore, senior vice president and general counsel for the National Restaurant Association, could have grave implications for restaurateurs.
When managers have tried to get drivers to do this -- myself included -- it sparks the jokes about, What tips. I got a tip for ya. Don t report your tips.

Kilgore believes the law only holds employers accountable for reporting what employees report to them, regardless of whether those reports are accurate.
The NRA urges operators to teach responsible tip reporting practices, he said, and it sells instructional materials to assist in that effort. However, he added, owners can only do so much.
The real problem is that you can say it until you re blue in the face, but if employees are not going to report all their tips, then the employer s not going to know it, particularly the cash tips, said Kilgore, from his Washington, D.C. office.
Bill Green, co-owner of Mamma Rosa s, a pizzeria in Salem, Ind., said he doesn t have the time to be a tip cop at his pizzeria.
Our employees are aware they are supposed to report their tips, but whether they do for sure is hard to know, said Green. In my opinion, as a business owner, I m not responsible to be a collection agency for the government.
Credit the cash businesses
Of restaurants whose employees receive tips, pizza delivery drivers may be the most challenging to monitor. Drivers collect gratuities off premise and typically are tipped in cash.
Additionally, said, J.W. Callahan, a Georgia-based veteran delivery driver and the founder of the Association of Pizza Delivery Drivers, even when easily tracked payments such as checks and credit cards are used, customers still regularly tip drivers in cash.
Credit card and check payments represent a small percentage of pizza payments, according to Dale Hoyer, president and co-founder of Wichita, Kan.-based Franchise Services Company FSC. In other words, precise tracking of cash tips in pizza delivery is virtually impossible.
How do you get around that problem outside of following them around or calling customers and asking what they tipped. asked Hoyer, whose company provides bookkeeping and financial reporting services for restaurants. I don t think there s going to be a way to do that.
Lester said that less than 2 percent of the deliveries he makes each week are paid by credit card, and just as happens with Callahan, most of those people tip with cash.
Despite such claims, Hoyer doesn t believe that the problem of underreported tips is as widespread in the foodservice industry at large as some might think. When he worked as a controller for Pizza Hut, Hoyer said the company applied formalized educational and review policies to ensure employees were reporting all their tips.
His clients, many of whom are pizza chains, employ similar practices, he added, but he knows that no system is entirely perfect. Education has to go beyond managers and supervisors and straight to table servers and delivery drivers, he said.
Kilgore doesn t believe underreported gratuity is an industry-wide problem either.
We ve never done any survey on this, but I d be highly skeptical that this is a widespread occurrence, Kilgore said. Responding to Lester s claim that he d never been told by a supervisor to report tips, he asked, What does the employer gain by that. If there are no tips reported and it s a restaurant that has tipped employees, that s the first thing the IRS is going to see when the employer files its tip reporting.
This is the law
Thomas Burger, director of employment tax for the IRS Small Business Self-Employed SBSE Division in Washington, D.C., admits that operators -- and tipped employees especially -- commonly misunderstand how much of their tips must be reported.
The law basically requires any employee that makes more than 20 a month in tips to report all of those tips to their employer by the tenth day of the following month, said Burger. Tips are considered wages, and the employer s obligation is to report what is reported to him by the employee.
The IRS provides Form 4070 to assist employees in recording and reporting their tips on a monthly basis, but employees aren t legally bound to use it.
It s just a tool we provide them, he said.
During audits, Burger said he s also heard operators and tipped employees claim they thought they were required to report just 8 percent of their gross sales as tips, not 100 percent as the law states. Though a widely held belief, he said, it s completely false.
The 8 percent rule, as it s known throughout the industry, works this way:
The U.S. Department of Labor allows tipped restaurant employees to be paid less than minimum wage i.e. table servers are commonly paid 2.13 per hour because it knows gratuities added to that reduced wage will raise that wage to at least the mandated minimum wage.
The 8 percent rule is an employer obligation only, said Burger. In order to get to that minimum wage, the employer must certify that the employee is making up the difference between the hourly rate and the minimum wage on an hourly basis with tips.
Despite the efforts of the IRS and the NRA to provide educational materials on tip-reporting law, APDD s Callahan says the tax code is both intimidating and difficult to understand, and that operators do precious little if anything to educate their employees about its intricacies. I don t fully understand it myself -- not even close in fact.

If someone s not voluntarily complying, whether that s an employee or employer, they run the risk of an audit, said Burger, adding that the IRS doesn t seek out any particular company, large or small, for audits. If you ve got 10 restaurants in a given geographical area reporting an average tip of 15 percent, and you ve got another restaurant reporting just 2 percent, then that one s going to float to the top of the audit pile. That s a red flag.
Despite the bickering between the IRS and the restaurant industry, the IRS offered an olive branch of sorts, dubbed the Tip Reporting Alternative Commitment TRAC.
According to the NRA s Web site, under the TRAC, a restaurateur who signs a TRAC assumes greater responsibility for getting employees to report their tips.
In return, the IRS agrees not to bill the restaurant for FICA taxes on allegedly unreported tips unless it has first examined employees records.
Along the same lines and in a more operator self-policing fashion, the NRA created the Employer s Tip Reporting Alternative Commitment or EmTRAC.
Employers who develop their own EmTRAC are afforded the same protections provided by TRAC, and they gain a little more flexibility to develop tip-reporting procedures that better suit their needs.
Each employer s customized EmTRAC must be approved by the IRS, but it doesn t require an employer to enter into a formal written contract with the IRS.
Whichever one an operator chooses, Kilgore said, the goals of avoiding employer-first audits and aggregate tip estimates are accomplished.
Any audit would begin with an employee tip examination and that s exactly the way we believe the law should have been interpreted by the Supreme Court, Kilgore said.

Few operators were willing to speak either on or off the record about their tip reporting policies or their enforcement because of concerns that public discussion of such matters would catch the attention of the IRS.

VPN service overstates its abilities: When you log in to the seven-day VPN trial, Avast Free Antivirus tells you, Your Internet activity is now completely invisible so nobody can spy on you, but that isn t necessarily true. Your Internet service provider can still detect that you re connecting to a VPN, and someone can monitor the VPN s exit point back onto the public Internet and keep logs of that activity. Starting windows security center via the services window causes windows defender NIS to be turned off, both NIS windows firewalls to be turned off NIS virus protection to be turned off.
Any idea why windows security center is either being switched off or has suddenly started reporting its status and whether keeping it switched off is beneficial given that NIS is providing a firewall, virus protection etc.

What are diff files .
A diff file is the difference between a version of the source code in the repository and a working copy. It represents any changes, such as additional features or bug fixes, that have been made by a developer in a working copy. A diff file is generated using the svn diff command.
svn diff descriptive_name_of_patch.diff
Applying diff files to your copy of habari
You can use the patch command to apply the diff file.
For windows systems, you can obtain a copy of patch from the gnuwin32 project
The common execution is patch -p0. This command will apply the differences that have been recorded in file to the appropriate file s in the current directory. As one diff file can contain changes for many files, and it preserves relative paths to sub-directories, the format of the diff file may affect where you need to invoke patch.
A practical example of diff and patch
predominantly from Scott Merrill s answer to Michael Bishop s question.
I modified a whole bunch of files for the Site class. When I was done editing, I changed to the htdocs directory of my checkout:
cd /home/skippy/code/habari/trunk/htdocs
I then executed svn status to see and review a list of all the files in my local copy that I have changed:
svn status
After double-checking the list of files, I executed svn diff to output a list of all the changes to all the files. I piped this output into a file:
svn diff /tmp/site.diff
I attached the diff file to an email, or upload it to the Google issue tracker.
You read my email, and save my diff file.
You transfer this file to your web host, which is running an SVN checkout of Habari.
Because my diff was made from /trunk/htdocs, you should change to that directory in your local copy. You may need to discern this from the contents of the diff file, if you don t know otherwise.
Once in the target directory, you execute:
patch -p0
The output of patch should report what it s doing:

If there are any problems, patch will report which file s failed. Figuring out what failed for each file, and why, can sometimes be challenging.
When you ve determined that the patch works or not., and you want to go back to your vanilla Habari, you use the Subversion revert command. Using the -R recursive flag lets you easily revert your entire checkout to a clean state:
