You can tell if the product key is OEM by looking in Control Panel System.
If you scroll down to the bottom, where it says Product ID, if it contains the letters OEM, the key you used to install it was an OEM key which is valid only for the first computer you used it on.
you need to buy either another OEM copy of Windows or a retail copy. Retail copy will have a key that can be transferred to another system if necessary in the future. That s why retail version costs more than OEM version.
Your copy of Windows 7 has already been activated on your Dell computer, it is not allowed to install on a second machine. You will need to purchase another copy for a legal installation.

Thanks for the reply but it still does not explain why it was activated properly on January 20 and only now started to mention that is not a genuine copy. Microsoft accepted the key on January 20 with no hint of a problem. The computer ran 8 months
without the message. Thanks again.
